How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

During laser hair removal, a laser light beam passes over the treatment area, targeting the hair follicle’s pigment. The heat is absorbed by hair follicles in the active growth phase, damaging the root of the follicle and discouraging further hair growth in that area. The precision of the laser allows the surrounding skin to be left untouched and undamaged.

Because hair grows in different stages, multiple treatments are recommended. The laser targets hair in the active growth phase and not those in the dormant phase. Most people require 6 to 12 treatments spaced approximately 6 weeks apart to target all of the hair follicles.

One session can range from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the body area being treated. Laser hair removal causes minimal discomfort; some patients may feel a warm, stinging sensation during the treatment, much like the snap of a warm rubber band. To increase comfort, a topical numbing ointment may be applied. The procedure works best on coarse, dark hair and lighter skin tones. However, our team of experts can make adjustments to the laser used to cater to all hair colors, skin types and tones.

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Prior to your session, you will need to refrain from plucking or waxing the treatment area. You will also need to avoid sun exposure for several weeks, as well as aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs. One of our specialists can meet with you prior to your procedure to give you further instructions on how to prepare for your session, depending on your skin type and tone.

What to Expect After Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal does not require downtime, meaning you can resume normal activities immediately after treatment. We may provide a special lotion or ointment to use for certain skin types. Side effects are rare but include redness, mild swelling, hyperpigmentation and irritation. Sun exposure should be avoided for the first few days after treatment, and sunscreen should be applied whenever you do step outside.
